Estonia Plans to Construct Bunkers Along Russian Border
Tallinn, Estonia – The Estonian government has announced plans to begin construction of bunkers and fortified positions along its border with Russia this fall. This decision comes as part of heightened security measures in response to regional tensions.
According to a report by ERR, the initial phase of this project will involve the building of command posts that will include 14 bunkers in the northeastern part of the border area and four in the southeastern section. These concrete structures are designed to withstand artillery fire, specifically ammunition of 152 mm caliber. The plans for construction will take into account lessons learned from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The total number of bunkers planned across the border could reach up to 600, with some being constructed on privately owned land. Ainar Afanasev, a representative from the Estonian engineering troops, emphasized that while the bunkers have not been tested against drone attacks, the anticipated explosive measures will provide adequate protection. In addition, special nets and systems will be installed to deter drones from entering the bunkers.
Furthermore, in the event of an armed conflict, the Estonian military has prepared contingency plans to lay minefields and destroy bridges and pipelines in the border region to thwart enemy advances.
These developments come amidst increasing security concerns in Eastern Europe, prompting Estonia to take proactive measures to safeguard its territory and population.
Estonia remains committed to enhancing its defense capabilities and ensuring the safety of its borders in a changing security landscape.
