Russian Ultranationalist Deported from Estonia
April 6, 2025 | Tallinn, Estonia
On the night of April 5, 2025, the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) deported Russian ultranationalist Konstantin Gorlov from Estonia, following the annulment of his long-term residence permit. This action was taken in collaboration with the Estonian Internal Security Service (KaPo) due to Gorlov's ongoing activities deemed a threat to national security and public order.
According to the PPA's official social media announcement, Gorlov is now banned from entering Estonia and any Schengen zone countries. The spokesperson for KaPo, Marta Tuul, stated that Gorlov's actions contradicted Estonia's laws and values.
In 2022, the PPA had already revoked Gorlov's firearm permit due to concerns about his pro-Russian sentiments. Tuul noted that Gorlov has consistently supported the military and propaganda goals of Russia and has connections with individuals working for Russian intelligence services.
Involvement with Military Groups
Gorlov was identified as having created and managed a fighting club associated with the Russian "Imperial Legion," which included training programs for cold weapon combat. Additionally, he has been active on social media, promoting Russian propaganda, a point emphasized by KaPo.
In March of this year, the Harju County Court found Gorlov guilty of justifying an international crime. The court ruled that on August 18, 2024, in a widely streamed TikTok broadcast, he publicly displayed symbols linked to acts of aggression and genocide, specifically an element of the Russian Federation's coat of arms. During the broadcast, he discussed the annexation of occupied territories of Ukraine, reinforcing the legitimacy of these actions against a backdrop featuring the emblem of the Moscow-based football club FC Spartak, prominently displaying the recognizable two-headed eagle.
For this offense, the court imposed an 800 euro fine on Gorlov, requiring him to cover his legal expenses. The court dismissed two other charges due to insufficient evidence to support the claims.
Controversial Activities and Public Statements
Reports indicate that in summer 2022, Gorlov traveled with his family to Russian-occupied territories in Crimea, sharing a video crossing the Kerch Bridge shortly after an explosion. His commentary sparked over a hundred comments online, where he engaged in discussions and disputes, particularly about alleged Ukrainian nationalism.
Gorlov also gained attention for intimidating journalists, particularly Oльга Минник of the Russian edition of Delfi. After discovering Gorlov waiting for her in a parking area, she characterized his presence as a threat, although he did not approach her directly. Police intervention was necessary, prompting Gorlov to leave the scene.
These recent developments illustrate the ongoing tensions surrounding individuals who support Russian nationalism and the measures that Estonia is willing to take to uphold its national security and public values.
